Cheap Car Rental, Usually Pay The Booking In Advance

If a car rental company offers cheap car rentals, you will usually be asked to pay a down payment before the car is delivered. This down payment is not high, depending on the type of vehicle or car you book.

If you fail to pick up the car on the promised date, the advance will be considered burnt or will not be refunded. So, think carefully about choosing a date to pick up your rental car.

Type Of Car Rental

Typically, rental car companies in Malaysia do not impose a mileage limit or kilometer limit on cars rented to customers. So, you can bring your rental car without worrying about the distance you travel.

So, every time you want to rent a rental car, check these mileage conditions first. Who knows, you may inadvertently choose a company that imposes a kilometer limit for rentals. If any company sets this limit, it will charge every 10km after the limit is given.

So, please take the km value when you take your rental car. Write down or, most simply, take a picture and give it to the rental car company as proof of the start of the limit. It is essential to avoid paying excessive charges or being scammed by an irresponsible car rental company.

As a means of promotion, car rental companies will advertise ‘unlimited car rental kilometers’ or ‘free unlimited car rental.’

See & Check Damage To Cars

I used to rent a self-drive car if I  went on holiday to Langkawi Island. If you go to Langkawi and rent a car, you will be given a particular form to check the damage to the rented car.

It will also record the current mileage/kilometer value for the car.

So, practice every time you rent a car; please make sure the vehicle is in good condition. Among the things that need to be reviewed are:

• Front and rear lights.
• Left and right signal lights in addition to brake lights.
• Defects in the car body.
• Car windshield wiper (viper).
• Car horn.
• Seating condition.
• The air conditioning either works well or not.
• Black oil and tire wind.

Take your time to get around the car and do the above review. Make a record if there is a ‘defect’ on the car. If necessary, take photos as evidence (before and after).

• I once rented a car that had a lot of damage. It stings. Besides not using the vehicle, I have lost a lot of time during my vacation because the rented car is damaged.
• The car has broken air conditioning. The lights can’t come on. 
• You certainly don’t want this to happen. It can endanger your life and family. So, this factor is significant for your safety throughout the car rental.
• Oh yes, did you know there are cases where companies ask for compensation for damage to their cars after you return the vehicle for a few days? They blame you.
• That’s why you must have a photo record before and after using a rental car.

Full Oil Tank

Some companies promise a full fuel tank when taking a rental car. So, make sure this promise is fulfilled.

If there is no offer like this, you have to check the car’s fuel tank. If you find a fuel tank or petrol limit indicator approaching ‘E,’ ask for directions from the company’s agent to go to any nearby petrol station.

Price Negotiation

Here’s a tip for you to save more. Sometimes when taking a rental car, there is still room to negotiate to get the best price. You can ask for a reduced price for the aspects in terms I mentioned above – that is, things need to be checked before accepting the vehicle.

For example, the condition of the black oil is too bad, or the air conditioner is not cold enough, or the vehicle’s tires are not complete.

If the rental price cannot be reduced, you may be able to ask to get a  cheap upgrade for a bigger and better car model.

Car Delivery

Some companies provide rental car delivery to the hotel or the airport. If you use this service, make sure the car is parked in a safe place or location.

For example, in a hotel, you can ask the company to park the rental car in the hotel parking lot to avoid your rental car being sued for not paying the parking ticket by the municipality.

Touch N Go

This card is essential if you rent a car in the Klang Valley area. If you do not have this card, it isn’t easy to use the highway that primarily uses the Touch n Go system.

So you must have this card, or if you already have one, make sure you have enough balance. You can only use your identity card, which has a Touch n function.

Sometimes, some companies provide these cards for the use of their vehicle renters. For that, you need to know the remaining cards available for resubmission later. Keep a receipt each time you top-up to show the latest balance on the card for refund purposes.

Take Good Care Of A Rental Car

As a person responsible for using people’s property, one must take good care of the rented car. Take care and use as you use your vehicle.

Found Items In The Car

If you come across any items in the car that do not belong to you, please inform the car rental company. You certainly don’t want to be held responsible for things that don’t belong to you.

If you are renting for one day, first confirm the redelivery time of the rental car. Use the period when the car keys have been in your hand instead of starting from the vehicle being delivered or reaching the point of receipt/delivery.
